HIKE SCHOLARS LEARN IT'S GOOD TO GIVE A LITTLE BACK
The focus of the May HIKE SCHOLARS meeting was service. On May 16th, the SCHOLARS visited New Harmony Care Center in Saint Paul. New Harmony Care Center serves older and disabled adults by creating innovative solutions to meet their physical, spiritual, social, and psychological needs. The HIKE SCHOLARS visited the community to wish all of their dear ladies a Happy Mother?s Day!
Matt kicked off the evening by recognizing the HIKE SCHOLARS who had perfect school attendance for the month of April. This month 9 of the 13 SCHOLARS (69%) had perfect attendance! Each of the SCHOLARS who had perfect attendance received an 8? diameter lollipop for their accomplishment.
In conjunction with this month?s theme, service, each SCHOLAR was given a copy of the Veggie Tales? book ?Bob Lends a Helping Hand? by Mike Nawrocki & Cindy Kenney. Matt read the story aloud and the SCHOLARS followed along. Matt is a huge Veggie Tales fan!
The SCHOLARS delivered big smiles, potted geraniums and Mother?s Day wishes to each of the 52 ladies at New Harmony Care Center. In doing so, they experienced, first hand, how helping someone else brightens their day as much as it brightens the day of the person they are helping. The smiles left on the faces at New Harmony are sure to have an impression on the SCHOLARS that will last a lifetime.
Just before leaving New Harmony, the SCHOLARS were rewarded for their good deed with Dairy Queen Dilly Bars on Harmony?s front walk.
April?s school attendance mark and continued parental participation are results of the Program?s success. It is apparent that the HIKE SCHOLARS and their families are embracing the program?s goal, providing educational opportunities needed to excel in the classroom and in life.
